Congratulations! You have come to this page for a reason, because you have something to celebrate, a marriage. It’s an exciting time. And, it is a very stressful time. You are hyper-focused on planning your wedding. You’re thinking about things like wedding showers, your bridal party, creating a registry, favors, catering, and the list goes on and on. When you have so many other things to take care of, it’s easy to forget to invest in the actual marriage itself. When we say invest in the marriage, we mean it. Getting premarital counseling reduces your risk of divorce by 30 %. As couples therapists we see lots of couples considering or getting a divorce and we know first hand how high the divorce rate is in the United States. So, we are all in favor of getting premarital counseling, Our couples therapists want to help you prepare you for marriage and give you tools to help keep your marriage alive and make your marriage a meaningful one.
What does premarital counseling look like at Heights Family Counseling?
Look, relationships are our thing. We are all licensed counselors with extensive training in relationships, couples therapy, attachment theory, and all the fancy areas that mean “we know our stuff.” We believe in researched based theories, so we all lean heavily toward using Gottman Couples Therapy. The Gottman Method is the most researched based theory out there. In other words, it works, and we have data to prove it!
We help you navigate the biggest predictors of divorce so you can prevent it from happening to you. Will we help you establish effective communication, learn conflict resolution skills, understand how your family of origin influences your relationship now, and all the other things you need to explore before saying “I do.”
We also use Prepare and Enrich, Emotion-Focused Couples Therapy, and IMAGO Couples Therapy in counseling. Premarital counseling typically takes 6 sessions, unless you are wanting to extend the process and address any lingering issues before the date.
What if we are religious… What if we aren’t?!?
Whatever your religious belief, or lack there of, we will help you! Our couples therapists will tailor their approach to include your religion if you wish. And, many of our therapists have training in providing Christian Counseling.
But, if you don’t belong to any religion, then premarital counseling doesn’t have to have any religious components. It’s that simple. When you see a trained counselor, we are interested in learning your values and understanding them. You don’t have to worry about being judged, or anyone else’s beliefs. It’s all about you as a couple and helping you in any way you desire.
We LOVE to work with ALL Couples in Premarital Counseling
We work with all couples, including monogamous, polyamorous, kink-identified, and LGBTQIA+. Many of our counselors are Certified Sex Therapists and are trained to be able to work through any sexual problems and explore sensitive issues in order to create solutions. Wouldn’t it be nice to work through this before marriage?!?
