Elisa Colera, M.Ed., LPC

I believe in the strength, resilience, and potential for growth in my fellow humans, and this is reflected in my therapeutic approach. I believe that at some point in their lives, anyone can benefit from the added support therapy provides to explore themselves and their relationships in a safe and non-judgmental environment. My approach is highly person-centered, compassionate, and authentic. It is a collaborative process between myself and my clients. I enjoy exploring emotions and thought patterns with clients to promote growth toward more effective ways of coping with emotions and healthier thought patterns. Oftentimes we carry false beliefs that are no longer serving us. Therapy can be a space to detangle, unlearn these beliefs, and replace them with healthier, more productive beliefs. I hope to help clients live more aligned with their best selves.

My approach is very eclectic as I meet clients where they are with whatever techniques I believe may be most helpful for them in that moment. I often incorporate techniques from therapy modalities such as person-centered, cognitive behavioral, cognitive processing, emotion-focused, Gottman's couples therapy, and more. Therefore, the therapeutic process is unique to each individual client and what they are needing. I have extensive experience working with men, women, and adolescent survivors of domestic and sexual trauma, people with disabilities, mental illnesses, and substance abuse. My special interests include trauma, depression, anxiety, substance abuse, and issues of self-esteem and self-worth.

What most couples don't realize is that research shows that the majority of fights within a relationship have no solution- they are perpetual problems. This means that most couples keep fighting over the same things. My work with relationships allows a couple to improve communication, learn how to "fight fair," and also understand your partner's emotional needs. I’m trained in Gottman Couples Therapy (Level 2), one of the most researched based couples interventions. In addition, I find it an honor to prepare couples for marriage; I am a Prepare and Enrich Facilitator, a premarital curriculum that can help reduce the risk of divorce by 30 percent!

Beyond work I enjoy exercise, traveling to new places, learning more about other cultures, singing in the shower, listening to audio books, watching movies and television, and spending time with my loved ones and my dog. As a child, my family moved frequently which has shaped my appreciation for diversity in people and experiences, but I have been happy to call Houston home since 2014.
